Business owners who know anything about marketing know that if they want their online marketing strategy to be successful, it’s not enough to just throw their product in front of everyone. In fact, that’s a great way to waste money while achieving limited results. Instead, the best thing business savvy CEOs can do is determine who their ideal customer is and tailor their marketing to fit that customer by using keywords that customer would be interested in and placing advertisements where that type of customer is likely to see.

However, many products appeal to more than one type of customer. What do you do if you sell vegan protein bars, for example? Some of your customers will be 40-year-old vegan moms looking for a grab-and-go snack that will curb their sweet tooth, while others will be 23-year-old exercise-obsessed guys looking for a pre-workout protein boost. These two distinct profiles require distinct keywords and distinct ad placements if you want to reach them. Essentially, you need to have two separate marketing strategies.

Anyone who’s trying to grow their business will find that they reach a point where segmenting their audience and marketing differently for different customer profiles becomes a necessity. Landing pages become a key aspect of this strategy.

What are landing pages?

Landing pages are essentially where a customer is directed—where they “land”—after they click on an advertisement. A successful landing page is directed at a specific customer profile, tells them more information about your product or service than you could fit on your advertisement, and has a clear call to action directing them to purchase your product or service.

Basically, the landing page is an important middleman between your advertisement and you making a sale. Because customers are unlikely to purchase directly after clicking an ad, a good landing page becomes a key component of your sales funnel. That’s why it is absolutely imperative that you create a beautiful landing page that will attract your customers and entice them to take action.

What makes a successful landing page?

Ultimately, a successful landing page is one that causes your viewers to take on whatever action you want them to take, whether that’s signing up for your newsletter, buying a product, or calling about a service. Your landing page should have a clear call-to-action and, if it’s successful, it should drive viewers to do that action. How do you do that? Successful landing pages need to have the following attributes:

  1. They need to look good. It’s a harsh truth, but people absolutely do judge a book by its cover. If your landing page doesn’t appeal to them on first sight, they’re not going to bother to look into it further.
  2. They need to use compelling language. Your readers should be drawn in to take action on your landing page due to the persuasive language you use. If you’re not naturally gifted with words or your spelling and grammar could use work, you might consider hiring a freelance writer to make sure you’re using language that will sell.
  3. They need to have a clear goal in mind. For your landing page to work, you want to have one clear goal in mind when you create it. If you want your landing page to get people to sign up for your newsletter, for example, then the landing page should focus on that goal rather than include additional links for buying your product or reading your blog. Too many options can confuse your audience and cause them not to take any of the options at all.
  4. They need to be easy to follow. Once you persuade your audience to take action, it needs to be painfully clear how they take that action. If you’re trying to get them to buy a product, for example, there should be a “Buy Now” button above the fold on your landing page. If you want them to sign up for your newsletter, they should be able to type their email address in on your newsletter and be signed up.

Ultimately, if you want your landing page to be successful, you have to take certain steps along the way to make sure that when people come to your page, they understand how you will solve a problem they’re having. Then, when it’s clear that you’ll solve a problem they’re having, it needs to be easy for them to take immediate action.
